Operation Welcome Home also educated thousands of schoolkids about "military appreciation and patriotism" and raised awareness about veteran issues, the organization wrote in its dissolution announcement to donors and volunteers. The land remains empty and after terminating its agreement with Operation Welcome Home in a unanimous vote on Thursday, Gilbert must decide how to proceed. The nonprofit and town entered a partnership in 2015with a lease and agreement to build the Welcome Home Veterans Park on 7.7 acres of vacant land across the street from Town Hall, at the southeast corner of Gilbert Road and Civic Center Drive.
The group had arranged some grading of the site but had not completed it. The Arizona National Guard’s 3rd platoon of the 258th Engineer Company performed preconstruction earth and site work as part of its training in 2018.

Harrison, in an emailed statement to The Republic, said construction costs benefit the town beyond the park and "set up the infrastructure for future development in the area." Yentes said volunteers tried everything from professional fundraisers and capital campaigns to events and grants, but funds remained an issue. The organization was constantly competing for donors' limited dollars with other veterans and non-veterans nonprofits, Yentes said. No veteran, relative, or partner will be turned away at the time of need.
Yentes said she is grateful for the work "so many people" put into the park project and the organization more broadly to educate students, welcome veterans and bring "awareness and patriotism" to the community. In 2015, Operation Welcome Home planned to spend just under $2 million on the park's design and memorial wall.
